The Story of Mianyang’s Three Steamed Dishes
Around 3000 B.C., in the Jianghan Plain, with its low-lying terrain and a dense network of lakes and rivers, the early inhabitants of Mianyang (which today includes the cities of Xiantao, Honghu, and Tianmen) developed and invented the culinary tradition known as "Mianyang Three Steamed Dishes" or "Tian-Mian Three Steamed Dishes"—steamed fish, steamed meat, and steamed vegetables—while engaged in rice cultivation and fishing.
In 1358, after the rebel army captured Mianyang City, the wife of a peasant uprising leader treated the soldiers to Mianyang’s “Three Steamed Dishes,” greatly boosting their morale and leading to frequent victories. From then on, Mianyang’s Three Steamed Dishes gained widespread fame! In 1728, a descendant from a renowned family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners who had moved from Jiangxi to Mianyang combined traditional Chinese medical theories with practical experience to uniquely invent the recipe for Mianyang’s Three Steamed Dishes, making them more convenient and scientifically sound to consume.
After the reform and opening-up in 1978, the eighth-generation descendant from a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners conducted standardized research and market-oriented promotion of Mianyang’s Three Steamed Dishes, thereby enhancing their popularity and elevating their status.
